The trunk skeleton is part of the axial skeleton. It is represented by the vertebral column, or spine, and the rib cage.
The spinal column (columna vertebralis) is formed by 33-34 vertebrae, including 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, and 5 lumbar. Five sacral vertebrae fuse to form a single bone, the sacrum (sacral bone). The coccyx consists of 3-5 coccygeal vertebrae.
