The Claimed Effect of Garlic
Garlic is thought to have beneficial effects on several cardiac risk factors, including lowering blood pressure, serum lipids, and glucose levels; garlic inhibits platelets in vitro. Garlic is thought to protect against cancer of the larynx, stomach, colon, and uterus, and against the occurrence of colon polyps and polypoid adenomas.
Adverse Effects of Garlic
May cause bad breath, body odor, and nausea; high doses may cause burning in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach.
Theoretically, garlic is contraindicated in patients with bleeding diathesis or taking antihypertensive agents, anticoagulants, or warfarin; garlic may decrease serum saquinavir levels.
